Found a set of 4, 7 inch wide 5 spoke mags. What is the tallest tire I can get in a 14? I've been looking but there is not much of a choice now. I want some width on the rear, at least a 70 series. Coker is over priced. Any ideas?

Here's neat listing of tires by wheel size that 40FordDeluxe posted some time back - Tire Sizes From this it looks like a 26" OD is the largest made in a 14" wheel, and taking that 225/70R14 to Discount Tires Direct, there are indeed still a few out there, but not many - Tire Products - Discount Tire Direct
I've been looking at 14" tires recently also. I'm kind of in the same boat, I'm doing a truck with a fairly nice set if 14" wheels but it looks like 225/70R14 is about it anymore.
.
You can claim Coker is over priced, but compared to what alternative? If they're the only game in town and their price is unacceptable then maybe the choice of 14s needs to be revisited. I'm not happy about the price of tires either, no matter who supplies them, you can thank government over regulation for a good chunk of that, and they just imposed some more tire cost increasing "rules" this past week.
BTW, one way to save a bit on Coker stuff, if that's a choice anyone makes, is to buy from Summit. They sell almost everything Coker makes and over $99 purchase there's no shipping charge. Not huge saving, but a decent amount.
I found these at Sam's
BFGoodrich Radial T/A - P245/60R14 98S - Sam's Club
VHT, there's a reason that you've "found" a nice set of 14" wheels available. Just about everyone has learned, or is in the process of learning, that the availability of tires for wheels less than 16" has decreased drastically, and many tire sizes that were common over-the-counter purchases not very long ago are now "specialty" tires, only available from Corky Coker. The BFG P285/70R15's that have been a tire of choice for the back of highboy's are a perfect example. BFG stopped production due to low volume, Coker bought their molds, and he's now the only game in town for that size tire.
Your choices of tires for 14" wheels will only get worse as time goes on, not better, and pretty soon the only alternative will be to call Corky. Either look at some bigger wheels, or accept the supply alternative. Uncle Bob's advice to buy from Summit to save the shipping is good!
Tire Rack gives tire dimensions on everything they offer; tire diameter, section width, tread width, suggested rim width, etc. Very helpful stuff.
Anyone remember when you could find 13" on sale for $15-$20?
Not now. They're special order only, and $70+
I wouldn't touch another set of 14" or 15" wheels again . . . ever. You'll lose that bargain price over and over again as you need new tires.
By the way, the only set of tires I bought from Coker wouldn't balance at all. I gave them away. He changed supplier from Chinia (I think) to Ukraine. This is not meant to be a blanket indictment of Coker tires. It's just my one time experience.
Once a long time ago a neighbor's wife asked me what a piss box 13 was. I didn't know what she was talking about until I drove past the local tire store where there was a hand lettered sign out front advertising P155 80X 13 tires for sale. Then it hit me.
Back around 2007 I purchased a set of 15" white walls and steelies mounted and balanced from Coker and I couln't have been any happier. When I recently purchased the 15" Cragars for the Fairlane I had no problem finding plenty of tires in this area 50 miles North of Houston. Just my experiences.
So Em, see if you can find me a pair of BFG P285/70R15's, and a pair of Firestone F560 145R15 78S's in that vast, untouched supply down in Texas. I'd be willing to go $200 a tire for the big boys, at my door; and $75 a tire for the littles at my door, and you can keep all the money left over! That's $550 in play for only four tires! Don't spend all of your profits in one place!
OK OK, point taken - - - all I am saying is that "I" have never had any problems with Coker or 15" availability to meet my needs.
nawwww, you can go ahead and hold your breath if you want to :toocool:
It won't make Em any more wealthy than he already is (we all know about those rich Texas oil men right?:D) but you can come close to your number at performanceplustire.com........except, as you likely already know, the closest on the rears that's made any more is the 275/60:(. I mentioned Summit above for "no shipping fee" advantage on Coker stuff, these guys are priced better on some of the pieces, and even with their $20 handling charge certain packages would price out better.
Yeah, I was just playin' around with Em'. Coker bought the molds for both the BFG SilverTown wide oval 70 series, and the Firestone F560's so Corky's the only game if that's the size one wants to run. Don't think I'd seen Performance Plus Tire, but I got the tires for the '32 through Discount Tire Direct and managed to get the drop I wanted, but the rears are only ~9" wide tread vs 11" - a different "look".
Coker tire production from China to Ukraine? Doesn't surprise me though. Michelin had some tire production in Romania a few years back. I hate that the 285/70-15 Goodrich tire isn't available from Michelin now. It takes good tire building machines and curing presses to produce quality in such a large tire size. Material placement is critical. I don't know what Coker has in the way of tire building equipment. Ukraine scares me.
For the drop/stagger that looks gook-I have seen some impressive looking 17s for the rear that actually look balanced with the front/rear look we all crave-don't know where my notes are on the sizes/offset but take a look-------
Thanks for all the responses. I know how hard 14's are to find. My last 2 work cars have had 14's. I'm going to sell this car later anyway. I'm wanting to build something like Roger has in his aviator. Car is going to be fairly low, so I thought 225/70 14's wouldn't look to bad. On the 15 BF Goodrich tires, general and cooper makes a C rated light truck tire that is close. 31/10.50/15, it has a regular tread pattern, not a truck pattern, I found them for $115 each. If these 14's don't look right , that is what is going on the back of this Dodge with steel wheels, 15x8.
Last fall I changed out my old BFG P285/70R-15's for Cooper 31X10-50R-15's. They have the same basic height and look. The tread may be a tad less, but not noticeably so.
Roger, I guess if we blow out or wear out our BFG P285/70R-15's (or they're more than 8 years old), we'll have to look at light truck tires. I've seen a few that would work. Not a perfect solution, but cheaper than new wheels.
Coker's BFGs are US made, so maybe that will work.
henry and Roger, I wish you all would change your aviators. I'm wanting to build one real bad and I haven't even finished this old dodge yet. You are just teasing me aren't you!!
Check these guys out for 14" tires a lot of guys prefer them over Coker's :Tires | Diamond Back Classic White Wall Tires - Vintage Tires - Redline & Redline Radial Tires for Antique and Classic Cars
rspears, that just ain't right. All kidding aside, good looking car. Just talked to a friend of mine, he has a nice 34 ford among others. He advertised it and had a guy coming with a 32 high boy he wants to trade in on it. I've been waiting to see what happened. If the deal went through, going to have to check it out!
Thanks for this post guys, now I've got another thing to figure out for my 40 Ford, good grief .
Still looks good, are they ever finished?
I said it was finished once . . . and made myself to be either a liar or stoooopid.
Never finished
